Employees generally feel safe in the workplace. According to the 2019 PCT/NPMA Workplace Survey, 85 percent of employees were satisfied with the physical safety conditions in their jobs.

For women working in the field, the issue of physical safety has an added dimension, but women interviewed for this report felt confident in the support they received from employers.

“If there’s someone that has previously made me uncomfortable on the job, they will switch it around where a male tech will go instead of me. They’re definitely considerate of issues like that,” said a pest control technician in Stillwater, Okla.

Rachel Alexander Mendes had similar experiences in her former job and her manager stepped in on her behalf. Now she takes the lead in dealing with difficult clients in her position at Advantage Pest Control. “I’ve got the authority to tell people what’s up and I appreciate that,” she said.
